چکیده

Hanstrum et al. (2002) show from proximity soundings that cool-season tornadoes in southern Australia occur in environments characterised by relatively weak, but still positive, buoyancy in the lower troposphere, and strong wind shear from the surface to 1 – 1.5 km. Threshold criteria based on these proximity soundings (hereafter termed ‘proximity thresholds’) showed that a surface to 700 hPa lifted index* (SLI7) less than –0.5° C, and a 10 m – 850 hPa shear greater than 10-2 Aust. Ensemble Probabilistic Forecasts of a Tornadic Mesoscale Convective System from Ensemble Kalman Filter Analyses using WSR-88D and CASA Radar Data

This study examines the ability of a storm-scale numerical weather prediction (NWP) model to predict precipitation and mesovortices within a tornadic mesoscale convective system that occurred over Oklahoma on 8–9 May 2007, when the model is initialized from ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) analyses including data from four Engineering Research Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmos...

Neighborhood-Based Verification of Precipitation Forecasts from Convection-Allowing NCAR WRF Model Simulations and the Operational NAM

Since 2003 the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has been running various experimental convection-allowing configurations of the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) for domains covering a large portion of the central United States during the warm season (April–July). In this study, the skill of 3-hourly accumulated precipitation forecasts from a large sample of these conv...

The Continuous Ranked Probability Score for Circular Variables and its Application to Mesoscale Forecast Ensemble Verification

An analogue of the linear continuous ranked probability score is introduced that applies to probabilistic forecasts of circular quantities. This scoring rule is proper and thereby discourages hedging. The circular continuous ranked probability score reduces to angular distance when the forecast is deterministic, just as the linear continuous ranked probability score generalizes the absolute err...

Quantifying Uncertainty through Global and Mesoscale Ensembles

The long-term goal of this project is to develop robust global and mesoscale ensemble analysis and forecast systems that are able to provide probabilistic forecast guidance in an operational environment. Although most operational centers rely solely on single deterministic forecasts from numerical weather prediction models, recent advances in probabilistic prediction, or ensemble forecasting, h...
